Library Pedometer Challenge

Libraries We Walk to

This year, our goal is to walk to 4 Mortenson Center partner libraries.

  1. Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango, Bogota, Colombia (7,468,032 steps - 3536 miles)
Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango is one of the largest and most prestigious public libraries in Latin America. It is administered by the Bank of the Republic. The library has a long-term partnership with the Mortenson Center, and many of the librarians have participated in Mortenson Center programs.
  2. University of Jos Library, Jos, Nigeria (19,483,200 steps - 9225 miles)
The University of Jos is one of the top federal universities in Nigeria. With funding from the Carnegie Foundation, the Mortenson Center spent six years helping the university library implement a library management system. The project was successful in spite of numerous delays due to civil unrest, lack of dedicated power, and unstable Internet access.
  3. Margarita Rudomino All Russian State Library for Foreign Literature, Moscow, Russia (26,947,008 steps - 12759 miles)
This library was founded in 1921 and is a major international, cultural, and research center, but functions as a public library. Over the years the Mortenson Center has partnered with the Library to deliver numerous professional development programs to Russian Librarians, including a project that brought small town local government officials with the local public librarians together to participate in a program.
  4. Jhuwani Village READ Nepal Library, Chitwan District, Nepal (33,312,576 steps - 15773 miles)
Located in rural Nepal, the Jhuwani READ Center serves 35,000 villagers with a library section, women's empowerment programs, early childhood education, audio/visual room, and computer room. READ Centers run a small business in order to sustain their activities. The Jhuwani READ Center runs an ambulance service as their sustaining enterprise. The Mortenson Center has worked with the READ Nepal staff to strengthen the library and its services. Mortenson Center staff will return in July 2016 to continue the training.
