Creating Music Playlists: Naxos Music Library

What is Naxos Music Library? NML is an online music streaming service that is an invaluable resource for universities, music schools, public libraries, music professionals, and collectors. It contains complete catalogues or selected recordings of over 800 labels, several different genres of music, and other general information about composers and artists in addition to libretti and synopses of over 700 operas.

Creating New Playlists

By using the institutional account or creating your own personal account, you can create new playlists in folders with an optional password protection function. 

Folders and playlists created in personal accounts are NOT shareable and not visible to other Illinois affiliated users

Folders and playlists created in the institutional account are shareable. You must be a faculty or staff member to get access to the institutional account. Account information is available by emailing the Music and Performing Arts Library at mpal@library.illinois.edu.

Setting Up and Accessing Your Folders and Playlists

To create shareable folders:
  • Go to Naxos Music Library 
  • Login with username and password which are available by emailing the Music and Performing Arts Library at mpal@library.illinois.edu. Reminder: Folders and playlists created under this account are strictly for University purposes.Naxos login
  • After login, select Playlists from the navigation bar along the top of the page
  • Under the University of Illinois Playlists tab, select New Folder in the Folders column on the left
  • Enter Folder Name, Author, and Remarks (if any)
    • It is advised to label the folder name with course number, e.g. MUS000, if appropriate, and use your name as the Author
  • You may also secure the folder. Secured folders can only be accessed by those who have the password.
    • Check the box for Secure Folder
    • Enter a password and click Save Folder
      • We recommend creating a memorable password for your students that relates to the class

Naxos playlist

Reminder: Playlists created in personal NML accounts can not be shared.

To set up private folders to keep your a personal playlists, you have to create a personal Naxos Music Library account.

To create a personal account:

  • Go to Naxos Music Library  
  • Select Playlists from the navigation bar along the top of the page
  • In the gray Student / Member Playlists section, click on the Sign Up link to the rightmember playlists
  • Fill out the appropriate information using your @illinois.edu e-mail address
  • Select the Register New Account Now buttonNaxos account

​To create a new private folder:

  • Log in to the Student / Member Playlists
  • Under the Playlists tab of YOUR NAME (e.g. John Smith Playlists), select New Folder in the Folders column on the left
  • Enter Folder Name, Author, and Remarks (if any)
  • You may also secure the folder. Secured folders can only be accessed by those who have the password.
    • Check the box for Secure Folder
    • Enter a password and click Save Folder

Naxos playlist

To create playlists:

  • Go to the CD page with your desired tracks
  • Select the tracks you wish to add to a playlist by ticking the checkbox next to the track names
  • Click the Add to Playlist button on the left
  • In the Select Location section, under Tab select an appropriate playlist from the drop down menu
    • Tracks placed under University of Illinois Playlists are shareable
    • Tracks placed under Playlists of your personal account are not shareable
  • Under Folders, select the appropriate folder that you have already created under the main Playlists Login Page
    • For instructions on creating a folder, please refer to the sections Setting Up Shareable Folders or Setting Up Private Folders in this LibGuide
  • Select your desired playlist or create a new playlist from the Playlists drop down menu
    • If you create a new playlist, you can select the position of the playlist in the folder by selecting a number under Sequence. The default is placing the playlist to the end of the playlists in the folder.
    • Fill out the Playlist Name, Author (your name is preferred), and remarks (if any)
  • Finally, press the Add to Playlist button in the windowNaxos add track
  • Your folder and playlist are now visible:
    • in your personal playlist if you have created the playlist under your personal account;
    • to Illinois affiliated people with the password if the folder is password protected; OR
    • to all Illinois affiliated people if you have created your playlist under the institutional account without password protection

To access the Playlists:

  • Go to Naxos Music Library  
  • Select Playlists from the navigation bar along the top of the page
  • Under the appropriate Playlists tab, select the desired folder under Folders on the left
  • The playlists will be shown on the rightNaxos folder
  • By clicking the title of the Playlist or the Green Play Button on the right, the tracks placed under the playlist will be shownNaxos playlist 3
