Planet: Planet Imagery Logo

Planet operates over 150 satellites that provide a high-resolution dataset of Earth imagery, with its unique combination of coverage, frequency, and resolution enabling quantification of change occurring on the Earth’s surface. The constellation of these satellites enables imagery (mostly of c. 3m spatial resolution) over extensive areas of the Earth’s surface, with most areas possessing imagery several times per week (and often more), with the caveat of cloud cover. Planetscope imagery (with their RapidEye archive) commenced in 2009, and coverage has increased in resolution and frequency since that date.

The Planetscope web interface provides an easy way to search areas through space and time, order and download imagery that can be processed both within the Planet interface, some applications such as ArcGIS or saved for external processing.

In 2021, the library at the University of Illinois, together with 12 researchers across campus, committed funds to enable campus wide access to this satellite data for research and teaching purposes. All users must confirm that their use of the data is in accord with the terms of the contract (see Usage Rights tab).

Before applying for data access, please check to ensure your data requests cannot be met through the NASA Smallsat CSDA Program.
