Zine Project: Zines

This article explores the meaning and materiality of contemporary zines. Based on a thematic analysis of 73 zines collected from a 2019 zine fair, and qualitative interviews with 16 zine readers, in this article we consider the ‘felt value’ of zines.

In 1990, only a few years after the first punk zines appeared, Mike Gunderloy made a case for the genre's significance. He celebrated zines' wide range of interests and the oppositional politics that generated their underground approach to publication. This article details his contribution to zine scholarship.

This article focuses on (digital) zines that are created by people of colour (POC). Through a case study of the POC Zines Project—a community-building project that promotes zines by POC—this paper looks at how creators of zines are experimenting with digital formats and social platforms.
