Subscription Databases often keep archival information—good for tracking activities over time, maybe the only place to find revenues for private companies, or anything about companies/executives. (See databases below)

Non-subscription (and maybe only use if you don't have access to commercial databases)

  • Using Google, Yahoo, Bing
  • News
  • SEC Filings  (8-K’s for US public co)
  • White Papers of companies—some concepts or product development
  • When you can’t find anything in the databases
  • Snippets of industry info from Associations

Search Strategies

In advanced search, enter your company's name in the field of Company/Organization/ Company Entity along with keywords below in the field of Subject Heading/Subject Terms:

  • SWOT
  • Strategy
  • Growth
  • Plans
  • Intends
  • Executive names
  • Innovation
  • Landscape
  • Blueprint
  • Policy
  • Specific product names or services

This is a comprehensive database of academic journals, book/monograph abstracts, company profiles, country reports, industry profiles, magazines, market research reports, newspapers, product reviews, SWOT analysis, trade publications, and videos. 

To search for a company, type in the company name in the search box. Then in Select a Field, click on Company Entity - CO.

 

 

Scroll down and you can search for SWOT Analysis under Publication Type.

 

 

Or search for NAICS/Industry Code, Product Name, and Company/Entity.

How to use EMIS - Tutorial Video

This resource delivers hard-to-get information on more than 80 emerging markets. It aggregates and produces unique content including full-text news articles, financial statements, company information, industry analyses, equity quotes, macroeconomic statistics, and market-specific information, which are derived directly from more than 13,000 local and global publications.

 

To find information: first click the menu on the left of the screen.

Click on Markets.

Here you can search for industry and/or country profiles by category or by entering keywords.

Scroll down to see profiles organized by country and region.

To search for company information, go to the menu and click Companies.

Search for a company by typing in the search bar.

Nexis Uni 

Provides full text and summaries of articles from over 40,000 newspapers, magazines, journals, wire services, trade journals, etc., in addition to allowing you to generate lists of companies using criteria that you select.
Articles are available for download, email, print or can be sent directly to Google Docs in a variety of formats including pdf, docx and xlsx.

In order to download articles, make sure to enable pop-ups for advance.lexis.com.

Click All Content Types. In the drop-down menu, click Companies. 

 

Click Company Profile. 

 

You are now searching company profiles. 

NewsBank/Access World News

Access World News from NewsBank provides full-text information and perspectives from over 600 U.S. and over 700 international sources, each with its own distinctive focus offering diverse viewpoints on local, regional and world issues. Date coverage varies with individual newspaper. 

ProQuest One Business

finance

Database of financial data on major privately-held companies. Includes private financials and revenues; private M&A deals and deal multiples, private firm valuations, VC funding, private equity deal history; and private and family ownership data.
Note that all users must create an account using their University of Illinois email address to access this database.
