The New Faculty Member's Guide to the Biology Virtual Library: Basic Information

This guide introduces the Biology Virtual Library and describes services and resources of interest to the new faculty member in the biological sciences.

Public computer terminals are maintained by Instructional Computer Services (ICS) are available in several locations on campus.

The ACES Academic Computing Facility (ACF)is located in the basement of the ACES Library, Information and Alumni Center. Provides reservations, and access to computer software. For more information, visit the ACF Website.

Use the online library catalog to locate and request UIUC materials; review your account; and renew items checked out to you.

Use the I-Share catalog to locate and request materials held by one of 71 libraries in the CARLI (Consortium of Academic & Research Libraries in Illinois) system.

You must present your I-Card to check out materials. In addition, you should familiarize yourself with the identification codes below for access to various library services:

  • Borrower Identification Number: the 14-digit Library # [ 20111 … ] above the bar code on your I-card.
  • NetID and Password: assigned by Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES); the NetID and password you use to register for classes. If your Borrower Identification Number is not working, ask a librarian for assistance. If your NetID and Password are not working, go to CITES Account Services, Room 1420, Digital Computer Lab, 1304 W. Springfield Ave.

 

Scanners are available at multiple libraries on campus. Please refer to the library computer services page for a complete list.

Students and faculty can print from most libraries on campus. For information on locations, cost, and ways to print, please visit the library computer services page.

Generally, faculty members may check out materials from any campus library for 16 weeks (with 10 renewals) or I-Share libraries for 4 weeks (with 3 renewals). This may vary based on the type of material and individual library policy. Item renewals are not automatic, and some items may not be able to be renewed. Check item due dates by logging into the online library catalog, and selecting "My Loans" in the drop-down menu on the upper right-hand side of the screen. Limit 500 items. Faculty members can also have volumes sent to their offices by using the UIUC Campus Mail option in the online catalog.
