Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Schools: Case Studies

Covers resources related to integrated pest management in K-12 schools.

Case Studies

These case studies offer real-world examples of how IPM plans not only save money, but also improve the learning environment for students and working environment of staff. Case studies and success stories offer valuable insight into the process from planning to becoming certified.

Integrating IPM in schools is a multi-step process that begins with involvement of all staff (administration, maintenance, teachers), parents, students, and occasionally the school board.

IPM plans include the following:

  • Recognize a need, which can come from many sources including state regulations, health concerns, recognition of pesticide overuse, or increased awareness of the benefits of IPM;
  • Develop a policy, which must include an action threshold;
  • Designate an IPM coordinator for the school and provide that person with training;
  • Perform an inspection of the facilities;
  • Implement appropriate least-impact measures for any discovered problems, which may include working with a pest management professional if the problem is large enough;
  • Initiate an ongoing monitoring program;
  • Communicate regularly with staff and teachers, and;
  • Reassess the program, results, and process regularly.
