Materials may be requested through the library catalog. We will attempt to fulfill all requests for materials with an electronic version. If no electronic version is available, you will be notified when the print material is available and ready for pickup. Print pickup is only available at the Main Library and the Grainger Engineering Library. Processing requests may take up to 14 days.
If you need access to the physical item for a specific reason (such as needing all of the parts for a piece of chamber music so that your ensemble can rehearse), please use the Additional Information box to provide your reason when placing your request in the catalog.
If you need access to materials that can't be requested, such as HathiTrust No Physical Access scores, reference books and scores, Special Collections materials, or items that require specific technology like microfilm, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. We will work with you to either provide remote access or a scheduled appointment to view the materials in MPAL.
If you only need a chapter or portion of a larger work, please submit a Doc Express request for a scan. You will need the full citation, including page numbers, to place the request. Please send us an email if you need help tracking down this information.
You may be denied access or asked to pay when you are trying to use materials off-campus that the Library has purchased or licensed. If this happens to you, use the following methods to access the resource:
Please return all MPAL materials to the external drop boxes by the north entrance of the Music Building (across from the Krannert Center) or the internal ones just inside MPAL's gray doors. There is a dedicated return slot for media items and a separate one for books and scores.
The Music & Performing Arts Library is unable to provide study space, access to computers, or printing at the moment. Information about these services in other campus locations is below.

During the COVID response, the Library is unable to offer access to traditional physical course reserves (such as entire books). In order to safely serve on-campus students, as well as students who may not be on campus, the Library encourages instructors to identify portions of printed works the Library can assist in making available digitally.
For complete works, the Library will try to provide digital access when such access is feasible and allowable under copyright law. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with purchase requests. Please note that electronic textbooks, anthologies, and scores are often not available for libraries to purchase.
For material not currently available in digital form, requests for digitization of portions of printed materials should be made through the Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery webpage. Since digitizing multiple works for multiple instructors will take time, the Library encourages instructors to submit requests as far in advance of the spring semester as possible.
