Omeka S: A User's Guide

An introductory guide to building online exhibits with Omeka S.

Overview

Items are the building blocks of your Omeka site. Items can be used to represent a wide variety of things, including physical objects, places, people and biographies, and more. While you can attach media to items, they are not a required element. To learn more about finding media to attach to items, please visit the "Media" tab of this LibGuide.

Adding Items

The resources below provide written and visual tutorials of how to add items to Omeka S.

Spreadsheets and CSV Import Module

Before adding items to your site, we recommend planning ahead and creating an item spreadsheet, in which you fill out the key fields (or the "metadata") you would like to include for each item. This will make it easier for you to create new items, as well as to create consistent and reliable item entries across your entire project. In addition, you can also use CSV spreadsheet files with Omeka's CSV Import module, which allows you to upload metadata for multiple items to your Omeka site all at once.

An example item spreadsheet and a link to the CSV Import module are both linked below.

Resource Templates

Omeka S also allows you to create resource templates, which allows you to define what metadata must or should be included for specific kinds of items. In combination with the CSV Import module, resource templates are helpful tools for maintaining consistent and reliable metadata about the items in your Omeka S site.

Item Sets

Item sets in Omeka S allow you to group uploaded items together by a topic or theme of your choosing. Item sets can be used to help users navigate the site, help them find a specific item or items, or show them additional perspectives on the topic and items in your site.
