Technology at MPAL

This guide provides a description of the technology you can borrow and use at the Music and Performing Arts Library. It also has some helpful troubleshooting tips, but please feel free to ask a staff member for help in person!

Scanning at the Library

MPAL has the following scanning options:

- 4 standard flatbed scanners (2 require log-in)
- 1 large format 11x17 scanner (requires log-in)
- 1 overhead scanner

Public patrons can use the standard flatbed scanners attached to the Public Stations on the 1st and 2nd floors or the overhead scanner. Large format scanners that do not require a log-in can be found in the Scholarly Commons (306 Main Library) and the Undergraduate Library.

Printing at the Library

You can print at the library from a library computer or your personal laptop. MPAL has both Black & White and Color printing available and print jobs can be released and picked up at the print stations located under the stairs.

  • B&W Printing: $0.10 per page
  • Color Printing: $0.40 per page

More Information

Specialized Printing

  • Color Printing: select "LibraryColor" printer from the dropdown and release it at the color print release station.
  • Double-sided Printing: when the print dialog box pops up, select "Print on both sides." Even though you are only using one sheet of paper, you will still be charged to print each side. Double-sided printing is only available from Library computers.
  • Large Format (11x17) Printing: we do not have a large format printer at MPAL. To print a large format document, select the "LargeFormat11x17Color" printer from the dropdown and release it at the Undergraduate Library. Large format printing is $0.50 per page.

Troubleshooting Library Printing

When printing at the library, please follow these basic steps:

  • Download the PDF file to the computer. Do not print from a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.).
  • Open the PDF with Adobe Acrobat.
  • If it is a large file, print smaller sections at a time (~10 pages).
  • Move the file into the recycle bin when you're done.

There are two common types of error messages seen when trying to release your print job:

  • The insufficient funds error requires that sufficient money is added to your Illini Cash account before the print job can be released
  • The generic error message usually means that your file is too large and you should instead print it in smaller chunks
  • Do not scan your printed music as a color document (this can cause issues with the B&W printer).
  • Save the scan as a PDF to the desktop.
  • Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and print as normal.
  • If this does not work, open the document on another computer (without a scanner attached to it) and print from that computer.
  • Re-save the PDF as "Reduced size":
    • In Acrobat, go to File > Save As > Reduced Size PDF;
    • Select for compatibility with the most recent version of Acrobat;
    • Close the current file and reopen the one saved as Reduced.

If your scanned music prints like this:

  • Review the "Basics" and "Scanning and then Printing" tabs in this box.
  • When printing select the "Advanced" option next to the printer dropdown.
  • Check the box for "Print as image."
  • Click "OK" and print as normal.

If you have scanned an oversized document using the large format scanner (11x17) and are trying to print as a regular sized document (8.5x11):

  • Save the document as a PDF to the desktop.
  • Select the "fit" or "shrink" to page options when printing.
  • If this does not work, save and send the document to yourself so that you can open it on another computer without a scanner. Then print the document from this new computer using the "fit" or "shrink" options.
