Current Events Guide to Democratization Movements in the Arab World

Libguide Overview

This Current Events Libguide is a collaborative effort between the Undergraduate Library and Africana Collections and Serives to provide access to current, quality information on breaking news in Arab and Middle Eastern countries, along with the historical and cultural contexts for gaining a nuanced understanding of these events. We elected to concentrate on North African and Middle Eastern countries that have a common Arab, or Muslim heritage.  One common misperception for these countries is that their choice is between dictatorship and Islamic fundamentalism. So far, we have seen secular repressive regimes overthrown or challenged by large majority secular insurgencies.

Beginning in 2010, North Africa and the Middle East were rocked by a series of citizen demonstrations and uprisings that continue to change the political and social climate of the region. Visit the Main Library's Marshall Gallery to see a showcase of the people and major events that brought about the change, as well as the library's related resources.
