The International and Area Studies Library celebrates the University Library's broad collection of comics and graphic novels that represent every corner of the world.

How to Conduct a Broad Search for Print Comics and Graphic Novels in Five Steps

Step 1

Visit library.illinois.edu and select "U of I Catalog" from the drop-down menu.

 

Step 2

Select "Advanced Search" beneath the search box on the following page. 

Step 3

With Keyword selected, type the combined search of

"comic books, strips, etc." OR "graphic novel" " 

into the first search box and click Find. (Note that this search will yield results that meet the genre and items that are theoretical works about comics and graphic novels.) Additional relevant Keyword searches, listed in descending order of those with most numerous results, include:

  • Graphic novels (as an independent keyword), also graphic novel (in singular) and Graphic Novel (capitalized) 
  • Comic books, strips, etc. (as an independent keyword)
  • Superhero comic books, strips, etc.
  • Science fiction comic books, strips, etc.
  • Fantasy comic books, strips, etc.
  • Comics (graphic works)
  • Horror comic books, strips, etc.
  • Underground comic book, strips, etc.
  • Manga OR Manhwa (the Japanese terms for comics)
  • Mystery comic books, strips, etc. or Detective mystery comic books, strips, etc.
  • Romans graphiques (the French term for graphic novels)
  • Cartoons and comics
  • Erotic comic books, strips, etc.
  • Romance comic books, strips, etc.
  • Biographical comics OR biographical comic books, strips, etc
  • Graphic books
  • Caricatures and cartoons

Step 4

Use the filters on the right side of the page to narrow your results; among them are Format, Location, Author, Topic, Subject Area, Language, Genre, Era, Region, and Title. If you are only interested in results that are comics or graphic novels, apply the Genre filter according to your interest.

 

 

Step 5

After applying filters, select a specific title of interest and verify its location, availability and call number before seeking it in the stacks or requesting it.
