Basic Form of MFHDs

Single Volume

The basic form of a MFHD is:

852 1_ ‡b library ‡k prefix ‡h class no. ‡i Cutter ‡t cop. no.

  • 1st indicator -- corresponds to classfication used (F2 for options)
    • 0 = LCC
    • 1 = Dewey
  • ‡b -- library location code (Ctrl+l for list of locations)
  • ‡k -- call number prefix, if required by book size or collection
  • ‡h -- class number
  • ‡i -- cutter number, year, suffixes
  • ‡t -- copy number

Dewey

The MFHD of a Dewey book going to Architecture (without a prefix):

852 1_ ‡b aaax ‡h 704.94930636 ‡i W85b ‡t 1

The MFHD of a Dewey book going to Stacks, with a prefix:

852 1_ ‡b stx ‡k Q. ‡h 869.3 ‡i B64at:E1985 ‡1

Multiple Volumes

For multi-part holdings:

  1. In the MFHD, click Leader in the MARC tab
  2. Next to Type of Record choose v: Multipart item holdings
  3. Click OK to return to the MFHD

For a work with multiple volumes, the MFHD will have an 852 field with added 853 and 863 fields:

852 1_ ‡b library ‡k prefix ‡h class no. ‡i Cutter ‡t cop. no.
853 23 ‡8 1 ‡a v.
863 40 ‡8 1.10 ‡a 1
863 40 ‡8 1.20 ‡a 2

  • 852 field -- indicates location (library + call number) and copy number
  • 853 field -- establishes caption & pattern used in the 863 fields
    • ‡8 -- use "1"
    • ‡a -- first level of enumeration; for multi-volume sets, use "v."
  • 863 field -- one 863 field for each volume, following the pattern set in the 853 field
    • ‡8 -- establishes sequence, so vol. 1 = 1.10, v. 2 = 1.20, v.3 = 1.30, v.10 = 1.100, v.11 = 1.110, v.20 = 1.200 etc.
    • ‡a -- should include the volume number only

The MFHD of a multi-volume title in Literatures & Languages:

852 0_ ‡b llx ‡h PT2339.A2 ‡i H37 2006 ‡t 1 | 853 23 ‡8 1 ‡a v. | 863 40 ‡8 1.10 ‡a 1 | 863 40 ‡8 1.20 ‡a | 863 40 ‡8 1.30 ‡a 3

For multiple copies and/or locations see the document How many MFHDs and Item records does it take?

Basically, each copy gets its own MFHD.
