Krannert Center Events: February 2018: An Anniversary Celebration

An Anniversary Celebration

Ian Hobson, music director and conductor
Debra Richtmeyer, saxophone

Happy Anniversary! We are celebrating Bernstein’s 100th birthday with his Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. You’ll hear favorites such as “Somewhere,” “Mambo,” “Cha-Cha,” and the “Cool Fugue.” We’ll also celebrate Charles Gounod’s 200th birthday with his Petite Symphony. Gioachino Rossini passed away 150 years ago, but his story of La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) lives on to this day. The piece can be heard tonight as well as in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, and it is referenced in Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Finally, we celebrate Claude Debussy (1862-1918) with his Rapsodie for Orchestra and Saxophone. Debra Richtmeyer joins Sinfonia da Camera to perform Debussy’s beautiful concerto, exploring the sound and character of the alto saxophone.
