Welcome to the Veterinary Medicine Library: Finding Books & Journals

A general "How to" guide for using the VetMed library.

Finding Books

Using the Catalog

If you need books, start by searching the library's online catalog.  If you don't find what you're looking for, just ask. You can search for items in either University of Illinois' catalog or the I-Share catalog.

Vet Med eBooks

To find veterinary medicine eBooks, search the online catalog by subject, author, or title. Then limit the results to "Electronic" under the Format heading in the right hand column.

You can also use the eBooks at the Veterinary Medicine Library libguide to get started.

InterLibrary Loan & Document Delivery

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan service will borrow materials for you from libraries across the globe. We can help you find books that are not available at the University of Illinois. Requests can be placed by logging into ILLiad or by searching the library catalog and clicking the "Request Item" tab.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the system that allows you to place Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery requests 24 hours a day. You can track your requests and download electronically received materials. For UIUC affiliates, your ILLiad account is set up automatically for you.

What is DocExpress?

A FREE copy service for materials owned by the University Library.  Requests for journal articles and book chapters can be placed by logging into ILLiad.

Finding Articles

  • You can find articles online using any of the many databases UIUC subscribes to. Some good databases to get started with are PubMed, CAB Abstracts, and Scopus.
  • You can access these databases both on and off-campus, 24/7. All you need is your NetID and your password
  • In these databases, you will encounter the Discover icon in the article:
  • Clicking on this icon will direct you to a page listing all the databases this item is in.
  • If the library does not own the item, you can request it through interlibrary loan on the same page. Find out more about requesting items through InterLibrary Loan here
