Reciprocal Borrowing

A guide explaining reciprocal borrowing privileges for visiting scholars from other institutions and Illinois patrons visiting other libraries.

Required Documents

CIC and OCLC borrowers must provide the following to check out materials:

  • CIC/OCLC card

  • Photo ID from home institution

Visitors will not be able to access electronic resources, I-Share materials, or Interlibrary Loan. Visitors may access electronic resources using public computer terminals within the library.

CIC Faculty & Graduate Students

CIC Faculty and graduate student card holders visiting U of I are issued a library courtesy card upon presentation of the CIC card and valid ID from their home institution. CIC faculty and staff have the following borrowing privileges:

  • 4 week loan period

  • 100 item limit

  • 10 renewals per item

  • Stacks access 

Please contact us in advance to request Main Stacks access or to verify the availability of specific material.

CIC Undergraduate Students

CIC undergraduate students card holders visiting U of I are issued a library courtesy card upon presentation of the CIC card and valid ID from their home institution. CIC undergraduates have the following borrowing privileges:

  • Building use only for items

  • 4 item limit

  • No renewals

  • Main Stacks access may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Richard Stokes at rstok2@illinois.edu to petition for Main Stacks access.

OCLC Faculty from Illinois and Surrounding States

Faculty from OCLC institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan, and Wisconsin visiting U of I are issued a library courtesy card upon presentation of a valid OCLC card and valid ID from their home insitution.  OCLC faculty from Illinois and surrounding states have the following borrowing privileges:

  • 4 week loan period

  • 100 item limit

  • 10 renewals per item

  • Stacks access

Please contact us in advance to request Main Stacks access or to verify the availability of specific material.

OCLC Faculty from All Other States

Faculty from other OCLC institutions may obtain building use only access to library materials and Main Stacks access upon presentation of their valid OCLC card and valid insitution ID. Other OCLC faculty have the following borrowing privileges:

  • Building use only for items

  • 4 item limit

  • No renewals

  • Main Stacks access may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Richard Stokes at rstok2@illinois.edu to petition for Main Stacks access.

Other Visiting Scholars
